«NOBLE BUKHARA»

During its long history (2500 years) Bukhara has been conquered, destroyed and lost its international significance as a center of spiritual culture in the East. But each time «Bukhoro-i-Sharif» («noble Bukhara») was restored again, its economy, science and art were revived, new buildings were erected.

The first mention of it is in the holy book «Avesta» under the name «vihar», which means «monastery» in translation from Sanskrit. At that time it was a small village surrounded by swamps.

After the domination of the Tajik dynasty of Samanids, perhaps the greatest prosperity reaches Bukhara from the second half of the XIII century. By XVI-XVII centuries the city became the capital of the independent Bukhara Khanate, and by the middle of XVIII century — an emirate. The central part of the «old» city forms an integral architectural ensemble. Back in Soviet times, Bukhara’s sacred birds — storks — nested on the tops of domes and minarets. At a great height against the sky one could see a clear silhouette of the bird. It was one of the sights of the city. There are more than 500 architectural monuments of different times and epochs in Bukhara and its surroundings. Wander through the narrow streets of the «old» city and you will have an impression that a «time machine» has transported you to the medieval East.

Bukhara region — formed in 1938

Area — 40.30 thousand km2

The administrative center is the city of Bukhara (616 km from Tashkent).

The region is located in the south-west of Uzbekistan — it is an undulating plain with insignificant elevations.

Only 1% of the occupied area in the lower reaches of the Zeravshan River is occupied by small oases (Karakul, Gijduvan and Bukhara), the rest of the region is covered by the sands of the Kyzyl-Kum desert.

The climate is sharply continental, desert climate with very harsh winters and hot, dry summers.

The region is not rich in water resources. The Amu Darya and Zeravshan are the main rivers. The Amu-Karakul and Amu-Bukhara machine canals, which supply water to three oases specializing in silk growing, cotton growing, horticulture, cereal crops, vegetables and grapes, are built from the Amu Darya. Processing of raw cotton and other agricultural raw materials is developed here. The basis of cattle breeding is meat and dairy production.

Subsoil here is rich in minerals: precious metals, oil production, but the main wealth of the region is considered to be natural gas. Most of the explored and developed reserves of «blue» fuel of the whole Uzbekistan are located in Viloyat.

Despite the fact that the population density in the region is very low (in comparison with other regions), the region is a leader in the development of non-ferrous metallurgy, oil processing, fuel and energy industry, production of Karakul smoothies and products of gold embroidery factory. There are dairy, cotton and grain combines, brewery, winery and butter factory, confectionery and macaroni and silk milling factories, production of construction materials.

Каракулевый завод – единственный в республике – выпускает каракулевые смушки золотистого, серого и черного цветов, которые экспортируются в зарубежные страны.

The city of Ghazli, built near one of the largest gas fields, is located in the northwest of the region, 100 km from Bukhara. It is a modern city that was twice hit by a devastating earthquake in 1976 and 1984, but was quickly rebuilt. It is from here that «blue» fuel is delivered to most parts of Uzbekistan and beyond through powerful gas pipelines.
