Jizzakh Region was established in 1973. The area of 21,2 thousand km 2. Its administrative center is the city of Jizzakh (203 km from Tashkent). The Kyzyl-Kum desert is located in the North-West of region, and in the Northern and Central parts – the Hungry steppe. The South of the region is surrounded by Malguzar Mountains (2621 m – spurs of Turkestan ridge), in the West – spurs of Nurata ridge (2169 m). The climate in the region is sharply continental: hot and dry summer (+450C) with gusty frequent winds, winter is quite mild due to the proximity of the mountains (-200 C -270 C).

Jizzakh is located in a narrow valley of the Sanzar river between the mountains and the steppe. In the summer, the Sanzar almost dry, therefore, since time immemorial, was dug a channel Tuyatartar allocated from the Zeravshan river. Numerous small rivers (SAI), drying up in the hot season flow down from the slopes of Nurata and Turkestan ridges. 5 km to the South-East of Dzhizak in 1969 was built the reservoir, allows to irrigate crops in the hot season. The first mention of Jizzakh dates back to the X century. It was a major trading city-fortress.

Not far from the Sanzar tract is a very narrow section of the valley with steep slopes of brown rocks on both sides of the river Sanzar, which preserved inscriptions in Arabic on the progress of troops through the gorge (XV-XVI Centuries). This place is called Tamerlane gate. Here lay the path along which merchants, pilgrims, conquerors, immigrants moved in both directions. Now through Tamerlane gates are automobile and railway, located on both banks of the river Sanzar.

The climate in the tract is humid, which causes lush vegetation on the slopes of the mountains: dogwood, rose hips, barberry, mint, rhubarb, herbs. For mountain forests, located above the characteristic juniper trees (juniper), birch, maple, poplar. There are also many fruit trees: walnut, hawthorn, cherry plum, pistachio, almond, apricot, pear. And even higher (1400-1600m ) in the mountains there are juniper (juniper) forests, the value of which is undeniable for the nature of the region (phytoncides are released into the air and absorb carbon dioxide), and for the national economy (very durable and valuable wood). On the Northern slopes of the Turkestan range is Zaamin mountain forest reserve, on the territory of which in Soviet times was built a sanatorium for the treatment of pulmonary diseases (the only one in the former USSR).

The forests are inhabited by squirrels, porcupines, badgers, gophers. Meet of the snake. The bird world is diverse: starlings, oak-trees, Orioles, nightingales and many other species. Great benefit bring owls, destroying rodents and insects. Mammal species of the animals meet the bear, wolf, and occasionally lynx.
